Unlocking
Jax Carter
We handed the keys to Jackson Stubbs, known as Jax Carter behind the decks, to unlock his production process, his love for Bang Bang, and his homegrown insights on the SD dance music scene.
Jax was born and raised in San Diego and has no strong desire to relocate. He attended his first festival, Coachella, in 2017 and got pulled into the DoLab, spending the following weeks searching for music like what he'd heard there. His taste has since focused toward tech house, leaning minimal and deep.
His first EP released early this year as the first release on Soledad Records. He is still producing consistently, and says the biggest challenge right now is finding the right contacts at labels and getting them to actually listen to his work.
On the local scene, he is grateful to be part of a saturated, like minded community, but wishes bookings were made more on the music than on popularity. He singled out Bang Bang for booking intentionally with the music at the forefront, and said if venues put the music first, everything else follows.
If you put the music first, everything else will follow.
His favorite venue to play is Bang Bang, hands down, for the venue, the people, the music and their approach to curating a nightlife experience. On his 'ones to watch' list: New Stereo, and the Fngrs Crssd residents WE, Erick Diaz, Heminguey and Rivka M, along with the Music is 4 Lovers crew.
Looking ahead, he has several labels interested in unreleased tracks, played his first out of state show in October, and plans to keep letting his passion for music and the scene drive his growth.
